Program Planning in Public Health

Course description: Build on the knowledge and skills acquired in Introduction to Public Health.  The activities and case studies will focus on public health problems related to chronic diseases. You will obtain practical skills and tools that you can use immediately as part of the program planning process. We will focus on how to develop planning models, including hands-on work with national websites.

Course pre-requisites: Have completed Introduction to Public Health or be able to do the following:

  • Identify prominent events in the history of the public health profession.
    • Identify the health status of populations and their related determinants of health and illness.
    • Recognize the role of cultural, social, and behavioral factors in the accessibility, availability, acceptability and delivery of public health services.
    • Describe the local, state, and federal public health and health care system.

Course objectives:

  • Evaluate variables that measure public health conditions.
  • Describe the characteristics of a population-based health problem (e.g. equity, social determinants, environment, etc.).
  • Describe the scientific evidence related to a public health issue, concern, or intervention.
  • Recognize community linkages and relationships among multiple factors (or determinants) affecting health.

 Target audience: Those who have completed the Introduction to Public Health course.

I’ll be talking to Heather Boushey, of the Center for American Progress about the impact of the fiscal cliff deal on the health and well-being of women and families.

Women’s Health Today is about women for everyone. How does being a woman determine your health and well being? Does health and other policy adequately address systemic problems and root causes of ill health? Women’s Health Today looks at health from a woman-centered perspective, examining the biological, psychological, environmental and social factors effecting the health and well-being of women and families.

Social Media Intern Search

Collective Action Strategies, LLC (CAS) is seeking an academic intern for social media, to engage NM women and men on social media platforms and radio. Tasks will include: initiating conversations on social media accounts — including Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Tumblr and Instagram — as well as assisting on Women’s Health Today, a radio show on the NM NPR affiliate, assisting with an electronic newsletter and providing general support. The intern will work closely with the President of CAS and host/producer of the radio show.
Selection will be competitive. The internship is unpaid. Student must receive course credit for the internship and must produce proof of such credit.

Qualifications
• Completion of at least two years of undergraduate studies desired.
• Must have a passion for social justice and women’s issues.
• Must be an outgoing, personable, and articulate networker and self-starter.
• Must be comfortable working in an environment where creativity is encouraged.
• Must be web savvy and enjoy keeping up with new content-sharing technologies online.
• Avid users of social media (primarily Facebook and Twitter).
• Experience on previous online outreach desirable.
• Experience using graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator desirable.

Community Health Workers Training Focuses on Results

Today President and CEO of Collective Action Strategies, Giovanna Rossi, trained twenty community health workers in Results Based Accountability at a quarterly Community Health Workers Association meeting as part of her work with the Early Childhood Action Network.
