Women’s Health Policy Unit at RWJF Center for Health Policy at UNM

The purpose of the new unit (yet to be named) is to create gender and health equity through policy development, sex/gender analysis, research, training and gender mainstreaming using a sex (biological) and gender (social) lens to create a deeper understanding of diversity and the biologic (genetic) and social determinants of health (epigenetic).

Women’s health has traditionally been trans-disciplinary with faculty in women’s studies, anthropology, sociology, medicine (internal medicine, OB/GYN, family practice and psychiatry), and nursing working together at both the local and national levels. Such demonstrated working relationships at the University of New Mexico (UNM) can contribute to the RWJF Center for Health Policy goals to further “collaborations and trans-disciplinary work that stretches the boundaries of traditional disciplines, creates new methodologies, and produces new insights and a knowledge base for action.” The addition of a focus on sex/gender analysis, education, and research will add to the Center’s mission to include a broader range of diversity of views to tackle to complex health policy issues.
